Generally speaking, taking the SAT Essay if it's not required won't add a lot to your application —colleges who don't recommend or require the essay really don't pay attention to it. However,  it might be helpful for international students who want to show they have strong English skills if they think they'll do especially well on it. If you fall into this category, then you should consider taking it if,  after doing practice essays , you feel very confident that you'll get a high score. If you don't think you'll do well on it, then I'd recommend against taking it.

In any case, writing about things to compare and contrast is an activity which requires your full attention and creativity. But when you have to compare things objectively, you should operate facts. Just like an argumentative essay, your text will need corresponding evidence. Search for the primary and secondary sources on the given topics before you start your first draft. Make sure these sources are no older than 5 years. They should be as relevant as possible. Don't forget to apply only credible sources  to reveal your topics. Those are:

Lastly, an often-overlooked aspect of choosing between the SAT and the ACT is composite improvement. Since the ACT composite score is generated by averaging the scores from the four sections (English, Math, Reading, and Science), a student must improve in almost every aspect of the exam in order to improve their overall score—gains in only one section will not make a big difference in raising the composite score, since those gains will be spread out when the scores are averaged together. One lagging section can keep a composite from breaking into the 30’s. On the SAT, however, answering five more questions correctly between the Critical Reading and the Math sections could raise your score from a 1250 to a 1300. As you can see, on the SAT, smaller improvements can make a huge difference in your composite score.
